Places

Although this is not a university building, this photograph is intended to show that, on coming to university, everything seems daunting and you can feel quite small compared to a large campus and even a new city. By taking a photograph looking straight up at the building, it gives the impression it's looming over the photographer.

People

Starting university actually involves taking photographs and working hard and this photograph is intended to show both the idea of working alongside new people as well the practical part of the course.

Culture

Banksy's work was born out of the Bristol underground scene and is very much part of Bristol's culture.

Movement

I used slow shutter speed to blur the people in an attempt to show movement. It's also representative of the feeling of being lost in a new town and having people move so fast around you while you try and adapt.

Depth of field/focus

By using a slower shutter speed and manipulating the focus, I tried to represent the drinking side of my university experience so far and somehow give the impression of being drunk and not being able to see clearly.

My home life is important to me. I have lived in the same little town and in the same house for nearly 20 years. Where I come from helps make me who I am, I think. Exploring these concepts in photography is something I have done before. I like to show what make me, me. So I had the idea to look at the similarities between the town I come from, and Cheltenham. I know that I haven't moved far away, but I can already see the differences. But if you look closely, the similarities do stand out.

People

He was only too willing to have his photo taken.

This morning I took a walk around Cheltenham. I came across this fruit and veg stall along the high street. Every Thursday in Thornbury we have a farmers market, where local people sell local produce. Its something the community recognise and support.

Culture

I found her asleep at her stall.

'new photographs that represent your photographic interests' Community is important in Thornbury. The local newspaper helps keep it together. Newspaper photography is something that interests me greatly. But also the idea that the local people are behind the stories. This is clearly a sense of community too. She is a face that the local people all recognise.

Place

  To the sky.

I like to look at churches. They are all different. They have similarities, but like people, they are never the same. Discovering a new church in a new place is always interesting, but as well as this, you always discover new people too.

Movement

Look up.

Cheltenham, like Thornbury has some interesting buildings. The lower part of the high street is most similar.
